• Referring to older people as cute

Referring to older people as cute.

You may think this should make them feel good, that you are complimenting them.  But you aren’t.  You may be dismissing them and not realizing what you are doing and consequently how you may make them feel.

Take a breath.  You don’t need to make any statement at all actually.  Recognize your need to make statements or to pass judgment.

No one is thrilled to be called cute.  And older people know what this means.  You are referring to their age.  They are so much more.  So if you have the time, find out more about them with a better question or just stay quiet.  If you cannot improve upon the silence, don’t say anything at all.  Practice getting comfortable with silence so you don’t fill it all of the time.
